Brian Romer, Painter
Most artists resist being labeled, but Brian Romer embraces it.
Twice, his paintings have been selected as featured illustrations on the labels of Calona Vineyards’ award-winning “Artist Series.”
Le Dernier Jour, Courtaly graces a recently-issued Riesling.
“It’s good wine, too!” Romer exulted, pleased that the 2003 VQA Pinot Gris that lies under one of his paintings has won the New World International Wine Competition Gold Medal for wines in the $10-$30 price category. He expects the Riesling now sporting a Romer illustration will be equally well received.
Typically, Calona’s call for submissions results in over 2,000 entries from all over the world. For Romer’s work to be chosen twice is an outstanding honour.
The former banker-turned-real estate developer recently “retired” to the Sunshine Coast, and has never been so busy. Just below their charming log cabin in Selma Park, they’ve built a waterfront dream home with a killer view (and a killer driveway to match). Brian’s paintings crowd the walls. Sculptures, photographs and art works by their many friends give the timber-framed house the look of a private gallery.
Romer has been a lifelong painter, and expresses himself as very happy he was able to quit the City lifestyle for the Coast and devote himself to his art full-time “while I still have my faculties,” he jokes.
Taking the path less traveled, Romer has moved from an abstract, Toni Onley-ish style to his current lush work that is more representational, but with an expressionist quality reminiscent of the Group of Seven. The deep, rich colours of fir and cedar, the texture of beach and cliff faces are enhanced by Romer’s generous technique.
His most recent work will be on display through the month of June at Gift of the Eagle Gallery, 689 Highway 101 (Gibsons Way) at Martin Road in Gibsons. Meet the artist at the opening reception, June 3 from 7 to 9 pm. And guess what wine they’re serving?
