Spend “An Afternoon in France” without leaving the Sunshine Coast, as artists Yzabelle Delisle Milton AFCA and Lucille Racicot evoke the country, village and urban scenes with an exposition of paintings on September 3 from 1 to 5 pm at the garden of Milton’s L’Atelier studio, 6543 Gale Avenue North in Sechelt.
Milton and Racicot’s travels through Provence and Languedoc yielded a series of evocative watercolours that speak to one, undeniably, of the land of Van Gogh.
Milton loves to work with watercolours. After sketching and then adapting the scene to fit her vision, she plunges into a quick ink outline and then reaches for the colours. “The days are too short! I like to work quickly, spontaneously, and watercolour allows that,” she said recently.
The results are fresh, bold, vibrant, and capture the essence of a scene, or a mood, perfectly. There is a joie de vivre glowing through all her paintings that makes them leap off the wall and into the heart.

Although watercolour may be her preference, Milton has built her reputation with a wide variety of work and developed interesting techniques in an equally wide variety of media. In her studio, she works surrounded by beautifully executed and framed examples.
Starting as a fashion artist, Milton eventually graduated from the Allan Edward School of Fine Art. Quebec-born, she gravitated to BC in 1980, and to the Sunshine Coast in 1999.
Racicot began painting as a student of Milton’s, and raves about the latter’s generosity as a teacher – sharing tips and techniques, and making classes fun.
Now fast friends, the two work side by side as colleagues and will be sharing their experiences through this first shared exposition. Mark your calendars, and go.
