Spiritual Chameleon Spotted in Gibsons

Article by Heather Jeal

Former Buddhist monk, war correspondent, author, and activist Alan Clements performs his critically acclaimed one-man show, Spiritually Incorrect II – In defense of Being Human at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse Saturday, August 20 at 7.30 pm.

Subtitled “A satirical comedic monologue about the commercialization of freedom, war, and other lucrative Orwellian lies,” the show is billed as a night of liberating comedy, satire, and activist entertainment. Clements points out that “laughter, especially at oneself, may be the highest expression of spiritual freedom and certainly the best medicine against premature fossilization.”

Described as “the most spiritually astute humorist in America today,” Clement delivers literate, informed, and intelligent humour with his slightly subversive guide to recognizing – and resisting – the attempts of Big Brother to indoctrinate and manipulate.

The fi rst North American to be ordained a Buddhist monk in Burma, Clements lived in a monastery for almost a decade. Stung by the excesses of the Burmese dictatorship, he “disrobed” and became a spiritual maverick, working closely with Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi (with whom he co-authored the internationally acclaimed The Voice of Hope.)

A nonviolent activist, Aung San Suu Kyi is still incarcerated in Burma, and this performance is given to raise awareness of her situation.

Clements went on to become a war correspondent in the former Yugoslavia during the closing year of their war. His piercingly clear vision, and equally piercing humour, makes for a thoughtful and entertaining evening.
